Southampton striker Rickie Lambert is a target for Liverpool after it was reported that they have made an offer of around £4.5m for the 32 year old.
Lambert who is in the England squad to face Peru at Wembley tonight, has scored 60 goals in the last three seasons for the South Coast club. .
Lambert who is a Liverpool supporter would jump at a move to Anfield, but so far neither club have not confirmed or denied the rumour. Lambert was at Liverpool as a boy and spent 5 years there before moving onto Blackpool as a trainee.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add a striker to the squad to accompany Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. However, the move for Lambert appears to place Fabio Borini’s future at Anfield in doubt. The Italian spent a successful season on-loan at Sunderland and it had be thought that he may be welcomed back into the fold at Anfield but if Lambert does arrive that would push him further down the pecking order.
If Lambert does complete his move to Liverpool, then he would be the second Southampton player that Brendan Rodgers is interested in. Liverpool have made their interest known for Lambert’s Southampton and England team-mate Adam Lallana. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s move to Tottenham may now complicate the Lallana deal with the new Spurs boss keen to add him to the playing staff at White Hart Lane.
Lambert’s move to Anfield will signal the start of a spending spree by Rodgers as he prepares for a UEFA Champions League campaign next term.
