Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has signed a contract extension with the club after withdrawing his transfer request. The Belgium striker who was a massive hit at the club last season had stunned Villa by asking to leave just one year into a four-year deal.

However, Villa boss Paul Lambert held ‘clear the air’ talks with Benteke resulting in him agreeing to a new deal. Its a fantastic piece of news for Villa fans and also good for football to see that some players can be talked out of looking for moves so soon into a contract.

I currently find myself in a position unique to me in my football supporting life – which in fairness , is all but 5 years of my life , per se . My conundrum lies in the fact that I have a mate whom is an Aston Vanilla fan . Thus , as his pain increases , as does my empathy for his situation . See … We , I , have been exactly there and know all too well that ,  Pit Of The Stomach feeling for a season , possibly two seasons .  Moreover , for 5 of the last 7 years , it was them and not either Manchester City or Tottenham whom were our major rivals in being Best Of The Rest . Furthermore , woe for the hours back I wasted on Forums over the fact that Randy Learner had taken over at Bodymoor Heath and the BK should ‘Koff once more .

Aston Villa were once a great club, yet as other sides have become richer and have attracted better players, this side has gone from being one of the better sides in Europe, to being just another average side. It is a sad state of affairs for this club, who three years ago were looking like challenging the top four. However, the club is now recovering from the gamble and mess in which Martin O’Neill left the club. In what has been a difficult period for the club since he left, the arrival of Paul Lambert finally seems to be a positive step in the right direction for the club, however, it will not be easier for the new manager, as this article explains.

Aston Villa have put a turbulent 12 months behind them today as they confirmed the appointment of excellent young manager Paul Lambert from Norwich City. Lambert a Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund has taken over the reigns from hapless boss Alex McLeish. For the Villa fans they will be delighted with this appointment after their last two managers Gerard Houillier and Alex McLeish did not really excite the majority of the fans.
