Why Joey Barton to Everton makes sense (kind of)

Follow @footyscene1

I know that the headline ‘Why Joey Barton to Everton makes perfect sense’ has quite a positive sound to it but it is also quite a true statement. Now before the naysayers jump down my throat, I am not saying we should sign him, I am merely saying it makes some kind of sense in football terms.

A long time ago when Joey was a young player coming through the ranks at Manchester City, he was tipped for great things. He had a good engine, could tackle and could certainly see a pass. Amongst his reported suitors in those days were Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal who all watched the youngster from Huyton with admiring eyes. Just when it seemed that he was destined for a big move his wild side got the better of him and this was soon to become a recurring theme for Barton.

Everton: Squad Analysis by Chris Morris

Unlike in seasons gone by our squad is taking shape early on. Four additions before pre season really kicked off gave the whole fan base and club a lift.  A refreshing change, however we must remember that we have already lost three senior players in the shape of Jan Mucha, Phil Neville and Thomas Hitzlsperger. The latter i feel would of been worthy of another years contract. So in real terms we have only added one player to the overall size of the squad. Some other players will now feel it’s their time to step up, people like Duffy and Vellios.

Martinez and Our Own Maradona by Peter F

With Roberto Martinez ending his own lame duck period by making a number of signings, the change in management seems to have brought the unusual feelings of pre-season hope and optimism to Evertonians, with a clutch of interesting additions.

The club conducting their transfer business early is not something fans have become accustomed to, with the drama of deadline day signings a regular feature under the stewardship of David Moyes. The jury may still be out on the personnel brought in by the Spaniard, but whether or not they will feature heavily is yet to be seen. Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles are all trusted by the new manager, and after the likes of Phil Neville and Jan Mucha departed, the squad was in need of replacements. As well as the exciting acquisition of Gerard Deulofeu on loan for the season, it seems as though there are more signings in the pipeline, as the board try and back Martinez and help him build a squad which can cope with the rigours of a full Premier League season, hopefully chasing European football.

When Billy Beane managed to reach the World Series playoffs in 2002 with an unfashionable team and a wage bill a fraction of the competition’s heavyweights – based predominantly on picking up players on the cheap with heavy use of statistical analysis a new method of defeating the odds was born. “Moneyball” or “sabremetrics” has been the stock phrase for every sports club around the world without enough money to compete head to head with the giants of their respective games.

The football world may still be reeling from the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but already minds are turning to the future for both Manchester United and Everton supporters. For United fans, there will be anxiety over ‘life after Fergie’ under David Moyes while Evertonians will wonder whether Roberto Martinez can follow in the footsteps of the Red Devils’ new manager.

The recipient of today’s Focus is a Goalkeeper , easily the least populated position throughout the History of this fine Instition . Are there any other Clubs with Goalkeepers as #1 & #2 in Appearance Records , with another – Westy , staying for 12 years , 2 League Titles and an F.A. Cup Victory ??? Unlikely , I’d wager . Our subject today was , alas , none of the above , nor was he a Winner in the Green of Everton , though he did come damn close . He was also , upon signing , the most expensive Goalkeeper in the U.K. after his £80,000 transfer from Huddersfield Town .
