Today’s Icon , is actually a strange one , in that despite being employed as Manager in some of Europe’s biggest Clubs , as well as the England Boss’s job , and enjoying a career of over 50 years in the game , he would actually only manage his true love , his hometown Club , Newcastle United , for a few short years prior to his retirement , and even then , not being fully appreciated when he finally did . He was also amongst the most generically popular figures ever  in the British Game , with few if any ever having a bad word for him .  Ladies and Gentlemen , I give you , Sir Bobby Robson .

Born , Robert William Robson , in Sacriston , County Durham , on February 13 , 1933 amidst some of the harshest economic conditions ever experienced , as The Wall Street Crash’s seismic waves finally crossed the Atlantic . The fourth of 5 lads , to his Parents , Phillip and Lilian . Within a short time the family moved to Langley Park as his Father moved Pits .  Young Bobby was , as with most of us , Football Mad , playing every spare minute . However , upon entering Seniors , Bobby discovered that his Headmaster did not allow the School Team to play in a league . No matter , he joined Langley Park Juniors on a weekend and by the time he was 15 was representing the Under-18 side .

On leaving school young Robson , naturally graduated towards the Pit , becoming an Electrician’s Apprentice with the National Coal Board , and playing at weekends .  Nevertheless , he was making waves . A few Clubs showed interest but Fulham Manager Bill Dodgin made a personal trip to the North-East to persuade Bobby’s Parents that The Cottage should be his home . Despite a late offer from Middlesborough and a luke-warm attempt by his Idols Newcastle United , Bobby’s Dad advised on London . So , The Big Smoke it was .

However , his Dad also insisted Bobby continue his Indentures , so he worked all day at the then , British Empire Exhibition Centre – the equivalent of Olympic Park at the time , and training 3 nights a week . Bobby felt it was affecting him too much though , and became a full –time Pro in 1950 . Before long he made his first team Debut , in the First Division against Sheffield Wednesday , aged 18 years .  His career at Fulham was fulfilling on a Personal rather than Professional level .

Bobby often noted that Fulham was , “ A Lovely Social , Club . But didn’t aspire to winning trophies . “ As such , despite performing well himself , the side was relegated in 1951-52 . He would spend the next four years outside the top flight before being sought , and ultimately signed by Vic Buckingham’s West Bromwich Albion in March 1956 , in a £28,000 move . An Albion record at the time  . Bobby had played 152 games and scoring an impressive 68 goals .

He made his home debut in a 0-4 defeat against Manchester City the same week .  Once again , with the side no real , Great Shakes , Bobby settled down and did his thing .  He would Captain the side in 1960-61 , and 1961-62 Seasons , but after his Second Son Gareth was born , Robson approached the Albion Board for a rise . The then Chairman , amidst the prevalent Legal Row with Robson’s former team-mate Jimmy Hill and The PFA , over minimum and maximum wages ; refused . Bobby felt he had no choice but to submit an official transfer request . His old Club , Fulham , snapped him up for £20,000 and  doubling his salary in the process . He left The Hawthorns in 1962  having played 257 games and scored a respectable 61 goals .

Even then though , Robson was unfortunate . He was joining a Club – albeit for the second time whom had recently sold both Alan Mullery and Rodney Marsh , thereby scuppering any chance they had of competing at League or even Cup level .  Once more , he would Captain the side and would play alongside the Great Johnny Haynes and George Cohen , but it wasn’t enough . Furthermore , as the years went by , Bobby’s role in the team changed . Instead of its goal scoring focus , he became more of a provider and this is shown via his Fulham statistics during his second period at The Cottage .  Whereas in over150 ( 158 ) games the first time , he scored an impressive 68 goals . During his second incarnation , he played 192 games with only 8 goals . The impact of his position move was marked . Yet he still was the subject of Press speculation for Transfers even this late in his career day , as it were .

In all , it has to be said , considering his talents , Bobby Robson’s playing career should have contained two things . One , a trophy , any trophy , and secondly , he should have played for Newcastle United . Sadly though , and as was often the case then and indeed much later also , the Club did have an interest but were tepid at best . Almost Regal in their attitude of , well , He’s a Geordie . He’ll do what we want , when we want it . This , against Fulham’s Manager driving over 200 miles to sit in his front room , meant it was never to be . Shame though , nevertheless . Even , Bobby himself said , “ As far as my playing career went , I didn’t win a thing .. “  Yet he was held in high esteem throughout from both his Professional Clubs but also their opponents and his Peers .

His proudest moments undoubtedly were his 20 appearances for his Country . Ostensibly on Pre-Season Tornaments and Tours , but nevertheless Caps .Bobby scored 4 times and was unfortunate in just being born a decade or so too soon , as he saw Ramsay take the 3 Lions to glory just 4 short years after his final appearance in an England jersey . West Brom , and Buckingham in particular , were noted for their , Push-And-Run style , which later was adopted by both Liverpool FC in Europe and indeed was the fundamental basis for even the Dutch , Total Football , in the 1970’s . It was also from this environment that emerged Robson’s team mate , and later his Coach , Don Howe .

In the event , his playing days kind of stuttered to a conclusion  . He was muted to be moving to Arsenal in a Player-Coaching role , and turning down an offer of a similar position at Southend United , Robson was approached by Vancouver Whitecaps , Canadian representatives in the inaugural North American Soccer League ( NASL ) . However , in the most bizarre Managerial Structure I have ever heard , the system was such that Bobby managed the Vancouver based squad . However , there was another section of the squad . These were based in San Francisco and was overseen by the Great Ferenc Puskas , the Hungarian Maestro and ex- of Real De Madrid . Despite  this , and his life-long respect for Puskas himself , problems were soon encountered  unsurprisingly . Fortunately for the Englishman , Fulham had been monitoring his progress and in January 1968 stepped in and offered him the Manager’s chair at Craven Cottage .

His first game in charge was versus Macclesfield Town – then of the Cheshire League , in the F.A. Cup .  The side were in trouble with 16 points from 24 games . Bobby signed a young Malcolm McDonald but was unable to prevent the team being relegated .  By the November the writing was on the wall . Well , actually it was on an Evening Standard headline board outside Putney Station . It said  ; “  Robson Sacked by Fulham .. “ . It was the first he heard of it . Nice . Only the 3 terms of service , after all .

On occasion , serendipity comes knock-knocking upon one’s door . Sometimes , one is aware , others not .  In November 1969 , Bobby Robson was at Portman Road , Ipswich on a Scouting mission for another young Manager and friend , Dave Sexton , whereupon he had a chance encounter with Town Director , Murray Sangster . It was a meeting which would be the single most important encounter in the history of the East Anglian Club . However , in the interim , shortly afterwards , Bobby Robson was offered and gleefully accepted the Manager’s role at Ipswich Town .

Robson’s tenure at Town was not an immediate success . Indeed he underwent 4 seasons of what can only be described as mid-table mediocrity . Indeed , Bobby himself later admitted that in the Cobbolds – Ipswich Majority Shareholders , he was blessed with Football Fairy-Godfathers , and that 4 years in Football is , “ A Bloody Long Time !!! “ .  Well , in retrospect , if it were possible to obtain the counter perspective , I am certain the Cobbolds , Senior and Junior , would confirm that they got the better half of the deal .

1972-73 was the breakthrough season . Robson led the side into Europe but was also successful in the Texaco Cup – an Anglo-Scots affair , thus obtaining the first Silverware of his Career . For the next ten years the side would not be outside the top ten – with a close run second to Shankly’s Liverpool as his high watermark in Division 1 during this period  ; but for one year , 1978 . This was , in fairness , the year that Bobby Robson felt he had “ Arrived “ as he guided , The Tractor Boys to a Wembley Final in the F.A. Cup  to face Arsenal . His side was more than decent , Mills his Captain would later do the same job at International level . The gifted and ever so unlucky with injury , Kevin Beattie at Centre Half . George Burley the other young full back . Talbot , later of Arsenal , and Whymark up front . The tie and thus the trophy were won by a rather non-descript wide midfielder called Roger Osbourne . A local yokel , if you will . All innocent and typical F.A. Cup back then . Bobby Robson was a Big Time Winning Manager ; Official .

Instead of resting upon his Laurels . Robson used the triumph as a catalyst for his Blueprint for Ipswich Town . Despite the victory , he began to change the side almost immediately . Out went much of the midfield , with Robson utilising his strong Dutch connections – Ipswich toured there every year , and brought first Arnold Muhren and then Frans Thiyssen from Holland and into the East Anglian midfield . Eric Gates , a North Easterner like himself , was promoted from the Youth Team , as was a young Afro’d Scots Striker by the name of Alan Brazil . One utterly mind-blowing statistic often over-looked on Bobby was that during his tenure at Ipswich , a decade and more , he brought in only 14 players from other Clubs . Far preferring promotion from within .  It was a magnificent ethos , but one wholly dependent on a system from Scouting-Academy level right through to the first team  was under scrutiny , and under which his own Coaching abilities would determine whether it stood or fell .  In 1981 he lifted the UEFA Cup , as Ipswich defeat AZ Alkmaar , littered with Dutch Internationals , and having beaten Michel Platini and PSG earlier in the competition , 5-4 on aggregate .  A year later , he was approached by The Football Association to be Ron Greenwood’s successor . Ipswich made him an offer of a 10 year contract and ,  after he declined , bade him a fond and grateful farewell . There was no real decision .

Throughout his time in football , Bobby Robson , more than most , has affected People’s careers around him , whom have gone on to be major figures in the World Game  . Ronaldo of Brazil , Jose Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas of Portugal , all saw direct benefits via Bobby’s interaction . However , and ironically , concerning both having Newcastle United connections , his relationship with Kevin Keegan would be perhaps the only voice I can recall in my lifetime whom perhaps wasn’t as fulsome in his praise of Robson as everyone else . Bobby dropped KK , the England Captain and talisman of the previous decade , for his opening game , versus Denmark in September 1981 . However , 2 years later , and also against  Denmark , England were to lose the only qualification game they ever would under Bobby Robson – in 28 attempts , which effectively saw the 3 Lions eliminated , and thus absent from the Finals . Consequently , Robson , being the Fella he was , tendered his resignation –privately , to Bert Millichip , then F.A. Chairman . However , even to Bobby Robson , his successor was to be Brian Clough , and Clough’s personal relationship with the F.A. , per se , and Millichip specifically , saw the Chairman refuse to accept Bobby’s resignation , so he remained as England Manager , with a fresh determination and a focus upon the imminent World Cup to be held in Mexico in 1986 .

As an Evertonian , Mexico ’86 , will always be tinged with sadness . It was within hours of England’s elimination , that We , as a Club , would feel the first of very many seismic After-Shocks from Heysel , as England’s number 10 , Everton’s #8 , and FIFA Cop De Mundial Golden Boot Winner , 1986 , Gary Lineker – ironically , a la W Rooney some 18 years later ; would do all of his Press Conferences WITHOUT mentioning the fact that he played for Everton . AS for the Country at large , they also had misgivings , as not only underwhelming performances and results in the first 2 Group games , but Bryan Robson , his Manager’s Namesake and Talisman , dubbed Captain Fantastic by the Media , in an inauspicious tumble , managed to re-dislocate a shoulder with had plagued him throughout his career and was ruled out of the Tournament .  His erstwhile Manchester United colleague , now resident in Italian Football , Ray Wilkins was also sent off in the same game . Thus , changes would result , whether the Manager wanted to or not . Once more , Everton played its part . Just like the last time Mexico held the Competition .

The 3rd and final Group game was against Poland . They lined up with the Toffees , Runner’s Up in both leading domestic competitions the season just ended , and Champions the year before , and indeed after ; making up much of the side . Lineker , of course , but also Peter Reid , Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven down the right flank . Furthermore , soon to be RS but also later Derby Winning Toff’ , Peter Beardsley also was selected in place of Hateley , so we’re claiming him too . The last time , 1970 ,  it was Ball , Labone , Newton , with Wright a Sub , and Harvey and Kendall not even picked . There’s something about Everton and England Teams in Mexico World Cups … I digress however .

The resulting performance was a revelation as , quelle surprise , players whom had played together with distinction all year , and had provided Lineker with 40 Everton goals ,  instantly gelled as Links grabbed a Hat-Trick and England won 3-0 . The point though , was Bobby Robson was , finally off and running at Tournament Level . Paraguay were next in the first KO game . They too were dispatched as the 3 Lions continued to impress . The following game against South Americans Argentina , and the first meeting between themselves and any British side since the Falklands-Malvinas Conflict .

As the World Cup Historians now testify , the Game of Football saw both the sublime but also the despicable within 6 minutes in Guadalahara as Diego Armando “ The Cheating Little Fat Get “ Maradona proceeded first to blatantly as Micheal Jordan , punch one in the net . He then , as a picture in My living room testifies , began perhaps the consummate slalom type World Cup  goal of all time , leaving one Peter Reid , bless , panting like an Asthmatic on an Iron-Man Challenge , in his wake . It was a truly fabulous strike , but for Bobby Robson , and myself , it blotted the Fat Cocaine liking one’s copy-book for evermore . England had a late flurry , pulled one back , Lineker of course , and following a Barnes run and cross at the byline of almost as good technique as Tubby earlier , pulled one across the goal which miss Lineker’s Fod by a Rizla Paper .  That was the last meaningful attack , and England were eliminated . Bobby Robson , now really feeling that the Fates were against him as England Manager once more thought about leaving .  Once more , he was persuaded to continue .

Thus , despite yet another poor shooting in the 1988 European Championships in Germany , with a side fancied as legitimate challengers . They were defeated in all Group games , the first by the Republic Of Ireland under Jack Charlton , Russia and the eventual winners , Holland . In truth , it was a competition – with one notable exception that England has consistently under-performed in .  This time though , having signed a contract through to the World Cup in Italy , the Gloves were now well and truly Off , as far as the Media , particularly the Red Tops , were concerned . Bobby did not quite get the Turnip Treatment as would his successor , but they were building up to it . Following a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia , the Sun ran with , “ In the name of Allah , GO !!! “

Sometimes in life , as I noted , events , or just being in the right place at the right time , can literally turn a person’s life  or career upside down . This , in a manner of speaking , is what happened to Bobby Robson in February 1990 .  The side he had was now approaching its peak . Shilton in goal would see no more Tournaments but remained as good as any . The Liverpool contingent , Barnes , Beardsley , McMahon  ; The Mercurial Waddle , Lineker complimented by the Battering Ram that was Steve , Bully , Bull from Wolves . Butcher , Robson , young Pearce from Forest , another kid , Platt from Villa making a late push for selection .  However , that game in February , against Yugoslavia , saw the England Debut of the Mercurial Paul Gascoigne . This Geordie , raised only a few miles from where Robson himself was reared , would be Bobby’s Ace-In-TheHole . Only he didn’t know it yet .

Drawn once more with Holland and Republic Of Ireland , with Egypt making up the quartet . England actually topped the Group this time , but there were momemts of controversy . For example , that The Players , Lineker , Shilton , Butcher etc – Robson was injured again and went home ; approached the Manager to alter the system and play a Sweeper . Whatever , the upshot was , Mark Wright was selected as a Sweeper for the Egypt game . He scored too . They now had momentum . Gascoigne and Platt snatched a late winner against Belgium and it was Cameroon , the African side taking the Tournament By Storm , in the Quarter Finals .

Following a truly inspired performance , Lineker shining in a 3-2 victory , Bobby Robson’s England found themselves in a World Cup Semi-Final , facing  “ Kaiser “ Franz Beckenbauer’s newly Re-Unified Germany  .  Once more , the Copa Del Mundial Fates did not smile upon the man from County Durham . As with Maradona in Mexico , Paul Gascoigne , England’s 19 year old , Go-To-Man , went into a challenge on German Skipper Lothar Mattheus . He was late , but Mattheus’ reaction .. rolling and screaming , earned  Gascoigne a yellow card , effectively banning him from the Finals . The Lad broke down in tears on the Pitch , with the game goinng on around him . It prompted Lineker’s famous .. “ Have a word with him … “ Mime to Robson , that has since entered Football’s Folklore . As it turned out , Gazza held it together for the remaining minutes and even slotted a Penalty in the inevitable shoot-out . Another stroke of luck that went against Robson and which is often over-looked , is the German’s second goal . Check it on You-Tube . The angle that Paul Parker’s body is at , to get it it over Shilton but under the bar … Well , it was a freak . ANOTHER ONE !!!

England’s first 3 Penalties , Links , Platt and Gazza scored theirs in response to the Huns’ inevitable pin-point accuracy . However , then stepped up Pearce . This man was nearly as Legend for Dead-Ball kicks at Forest as Le Tiss would be at Southampton , yet , this day , he went for power over accuracy , at a decent height and not in the corner . Keeper saves it . They score , again . Waddle kinda Waddles up , as he was wont to do . Places the ball .Takes 4 steps back , runs at it and , bladders his effort too . This time though , he shanks it altogether . The ball misses everything , and is last seen heading off into the Sardinian night in the direction of Libya . That was it . They were out .

The worst of it was , the Germans were to meet Bobby’s OTHER Auld Enemy in the Final . Maradona’s Argentina . Though an altogether different animal to that of 4 years earlier . To most Englishmen , myself included , we would have beaten them . As did the Germans , with a Brehme Penalty in the most dire of games . Prior to the Tournament , The F.A. fearing another debacle had stalled upon Robson’s Contract – expecting him to , Fall On His Sword .   However , the team’s success blindsided them . They did attempt to re-negotiate with Bobby , but , Gentleman that he would remain , he had , in the belief that he was to be fired , provisionally accepted a position at PSV Eindhoven , whom had approached him prior to Italia 90 . Thiis , having given his word , he remained true to it . Despite it meaning that he would depart the greatest job of his career .

His Assistant at PSV was one , Frank Ahrnesen – another whom profited by association to the genial Geordie . Bobby found it difficult in Holland , primarily due to that Nation’s citizen’s propensity , well , for a Nark . He later quoted to Voetbal Magazine ; “ In England every Pro accpts the Manager’s decision . Here , after every game , the substitutes will visit my office … “ Also , Romario , the Brazilian , later World Cup and Barcelona star , who had been allowed a free reign at Eindhoven . Robson wished to alter this . The Brazilian disagreed . Like that . Nevertheless , Robson took PSV to the Title in both 1990-91 and 1991-92  Seasons . Yet , bizarrely he lost his job due to , “ Not Progressing .. “ the Club sufficiently .

From Holland he went off to Portugal in 1992 whereupon his Translator was a young Jose Mourinho .  Yet again though , Bobby soon encountered difficulties . Describing the Club generally as being in , “ A terrible state .. “ and after securing a 3rd place finish in his debut term , stated that the Club’s Chairman , Sousa Sintra , was , “ A loose cannon .. “

Frequently approaching or signing players without Robson’s knowledge .  Bobby was sacked the following Season – with Sporting Top of the Portuguese League . Sintra cited the Club’s early dismissal from the UEFA Cup as the basis for his decision . Amazingly , and hugely serendipitously for BOTH Mourinho – hired as Bobby’s #2 ,AND another current Premier League Manager that he did ,  as he simply accepted an offer from Sporting’s Rivals , F.C. Porto .

During his time in Porto , Bobby Robson was approached by his 14 year old neighbour as to why he wasn’t selecting  Donigos Caciencia enough . And indeed , when he did , he was using him wrong . Bobby told him to put it in writing . He did . Robson took the Kid under his wing , sent him to Lilleshall , and then , at 17 to Scotland to obtain his first UEFA Coaching Licence , and via his association with Mourinho , gave AVB a miraculous introduction in Elite European Football . Amazing , yet so humble a gesture . Superb .

When Bobby took the reigns at Porto , they were in a bade state . Crowds were down to 10,000 with no hope in sight . However , that same Season , the Englishman steered Porto to a Portuguese Cup Final victory over , guess who ??? Sporting Lisbon . Bet that tasted  sweet . Moreover , Robson  took them to successive Title wins in 1994-95 and 1995-96 . Indeed , such was his impact that the Genial Geordie became known as , “ Bobby Five-0 “ , on account of the amount of 5-0 victories Porto gained under his Stewardship .

Sadly , it was at this time that Bobby Robson was first diagnosed with Cancer , at that stage a malignant melanoma  He missed most of the early months of the 1996-97 campaign but was back as the side lifted yet another Championship . However , during a telephone call from Barcelona Chairman , Juan Gaspartes , ostensibly to discuss Luis Figo , saw the Catalan Supremo offer Bobby Robson the role as Manager of F.C. Barcelona , which of course he accepted .

Robson took over at the Camp Nou in summer 1996 , making the appointment of Mourinho a condition of his own employment . Another early stipulation was that the Club sanctioned the $19.5m capture of Brazilian Ronaldo from his old Club PSV , and about whom Bobby had been given constant and ever improving reports . Ronaldo , yet another whose Star would Rise exponentially following association with Bobby Robson , as together the pair won The Spanish Cup , The Spanish Super-Cup , and The European Cup Winners Cup . A Big Deal for Barcelona even in those relatively recent days . That season , 1996-97 Bobby Robson was names European Coach Of The Year . Indeed , the young Brazilian was lavish in his praise of the Englishman’s influence upon both him and the side generally .

Strangely , the Catalan Club thought it best Bobby , move upstairs , for the following season , 1997-98 , being replaced by Luis Van Gaal . Though unsurprisingly he would remain there only one year before returning to PSV whom were in need of assistance . Robson took them to third in the Eredivisie , and achieving qualification for the Champions League on the last day of the season .Due to the temporary nature of the appointment , Robson left Eindhoven at the campaign’s end in order to take up the post of Technical Director . However , within months , Ruud Guillit was sacked as Newcastle United Boss and they approached Bobby Robson . Even then though , Robson noted , “ Their opening Salary offer was WAY below Market Rates .. “ . In the event , he negotiated a £1m a year contract . Only befitting for his stature .

His impact was immediate . The Barcodes , at that point , stone bottom of the Premier League faced Sheffield Wednesday . They won 8-0 and he was away . He ended the 1999-200 season with The Toon in 11th place . Having achieved 14 wins from 32 games . In late 2000 , with the resignation of Kevin Keegan as England Manager . The F.A. approached Newcastle Chairman , Freddie Shepherd ; He of the Geordie Birds are Fat Slappers , line , with a view to Bobby taking over in a Part-Time capacity . Shepherd denied the approach . After a poor start in 2001-2002  , Newcastle went from Bottom in November to finish 4th and qualify for the UEFA Cup . The next year they managed 3rd and qualified for the Champions League .

However , similar to ourselves in 2005 , the Barcodes were unable to progress to the Group stages and once more found themselves in the UEFA Cup , no mean feat however , considering whereupon he had taken over . In 2003-2004 they went on to 5th spot . Missing out on the Top Table but reaching the Semi-Final of the UEFA Cup , losing to Marseille .

At the end of the final game of the 2003=2004 season , Bobby Robson Went Public at his dissatisfaction at only – he said , about 5,000 of the over 40,000 gate , stayed behind to see the Players Lap Of Honour , possibly suggesting dissatisfaction ? I do not know . In any event , and after a poor start , albeit 5 games , and amid rumours- released later by Shepherd , of Dressing Room Unrest – that old favourite , the Chairman relieved Bobby of his duties at the end of August 2004 . Fair Play to Bobby Robson , he later stated in his book that he was routinely circumvented concerning transfer negotiations and players contracts  . Moreover , openly accused both Fat Freddie and Douglas Hall the other Director present , and nodding at the infamous , Fat Slappers , late night Drink-Up with Shepherd , incidentally ; of concentrating upon the First Team to the detriment of Traing Ground , Youth Development , etc . Graeme Souness would later cite the Club’s Training Facilities as a factor in a spate of injuries over some seasons .

In January 2006 , Steve Staunton was appointed Manager of the Irish Republic , with Bobby Robson as his Mentor , if you will .  Robson would remain in the role until November 2007 , upon the failure to reach the European Championship Finals .

In 1992 Bobby overcame Bowel Cancer . In 1996 , Melignant Melanoma which resulted in his having a partially prosthetic upper jaw . In 2006 , whilst in his Irish role , he suffered both Brain and Lung Tumours . As a result of the very serious Brain Tumour , Bobby had a partial stroke . His fifth diagnosis of cancer was with the discovery of nodules in both lungs which were deemed Terminal , in February 2007 , and from December 2008 which were being controlled by Chemotherapy . In March 2008 , he launched the Bobby Robson Foundation . By November that year , they had reached £1.1m in donations and was directed towards the Cancer Research  Teails Facility , in Bobby’s name , at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle . It still prospers today .

I have 3 tenuous connections with Bobby Robson . One , I KNOW the place he comes from . Id venture not 50 Scousers do . Secondly , I like Cricket , a lot . As did Bobby , in fact , he was due to take over as President of Lord’s Taverners , in 2007 , buyt pulled out due to his health . They later held a tribute evening , “ To The Best President We Never Had “ .. Classy .. Finally , Bobby Robson died on my birthday , July 31 , 2009 .

The outpouring of emotion , of respect , to this Genial , Gentleman Geordie was impressive . Nationwide . There would later be Statues of Bobby outside both Portman Road , and St. James’ Park , as was .

Prior to conclusion , I would like to recount one more short Bobby story . Its from  Radio  Star these days and Ex-Ipswich Centre Forward under Robson … “ I met the Boss – He ALWAYS called Him , Boss . NEVER Gaffer .. On a train one time . I’d finished playing and was out of the game . Anyways , he walks up to me .. I say , “ Hello Boss .. “ HE says . “ Where’s Your Tie ??? “ I didn’t have one on .. Instead of saying , Do one , he tried to stutter an excuse … BECAUSE Bobby Robson had asked him . It was an IMMENSE though throwaway sign of the esteem he was held by all whom were touched by him , and composing this Piece has been a pleasure .

Thus , Bobby Robson ; Genuine Football Icon …

A fine tribute, LCAB. You could have also mentioned that during his career, he turned down the Everton job several times (I think it was 4). In the gloomiest times of our recent history, I often wondered if we could have escaped those dark days had Bobby Robson taken charge. We will never know. Top manager, top guy.
